The largest city of Northern Norway and the 'Gateway to the Arctic', Tromsø is the start and end point for the trip because of its airport and relative ease of access.

Tromsø is only a small city, it only requires a short amount of time to feel as though you have experienced it well, which we will try to do during the trip. This trip is mainly about ski touring but since we are at that latitude it makes sense to see a bit of the city, as it is like walking through an arctic postcard!

Lyngen Alps

The Lyngen Alps is a mountain range in Troms county that spans approximately 90km in length and 15km in width. The characteristics of the mountains in this region are alpine in nature and provide fantastic skiing for expert level skiers. With several glaciers, beautiful ridges and spines, the region provides typical alpine terrain with the unusual backdrop of the sea.

Despite the summits lacking altitude compared to peaks typically skied in the alps, there is still fantastic snow to be had right up to the shoreline, thanks to the latitude of the area.

Ski Touring

The trips to Tromsø and Lyngen are ski touring trips, despite taking some time to explore Tromsø and the region. Since no lifts will be used, you should be of a good level of fitness and be an experienced ski tourer. Potential summits include Store Jaegervasstinden, Russelvjellet, Giilavari, Daltinden, Svarthamartinden, and Gråtinden plus many more. There is a lot of variety in the routes that will be done, based on the varying terrain and conditions, however we will start the week with some easier tours before moving on to some more challenging and rewarding ones. What remains consistent throughout all of the tours is how stunning the landscape is, both in the hills surrounding Tromsø and the Lyngen Alps.

This trip, unlike most other UCPA adventures, equipment is not included. Therefore you do need to either bring your own or hire some. You need full ski touring and mountaineering kit: skis, poles, skins, ski crampons, boot crampons, harness, a few slings, approx. 30L bag that can carry skis, some screw-gate carabiners, ice axe and an ice screw as a minimum, as well as avalanche gear (shovel, probe and transceiver).
