Val Thorens Ski Area

At the dizzying height of 2300m Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe and combined with the Glacier de Peclet offers some of the most snow sure conditions of any resort. The village is located in the heart of the ski area making it truly ski in ski out, there is even a piste and carpet lift running right down the centre of the resort. Val Thorens is part of the Three Valleys ski area which is the largest in the world but even on its own the ski area is massive boasting 140km of piste with an excellent distribution across all levels. The Val Thorens lift pass is included with the UCPA package but you can upgrade to the Three Valley’s lift pass on a per day basis.

Pretty much all the ski area is above 2000m and largely north facing which means conditions are generally exceptionally good. Occasionally the height and aspect of the resort can be a disadvantage as bad weather can make skiing impossible and make the pistes hard and windblown but then every resort has its pro's and con's. Throughout the ski area you are surrounded by a stunning alpine panorama with endless peaks in all directions. Another significant advantage of Val Thorens is its impressive network of 32 modern and fast lifts which keeps queues down to a minimum.

UCPA offer a day upgrade to the 3 Valleys pass this is usually around €30 (this price is the sum of the discounted Val Thorens lift pass and the difference of the two passes). Speak to the reception to arrange this, please note the lift pass price is set by the resort and may vary year on year.

Val Thorens Pistes

Val Thorens has an impressive 140km of piste with a good distribution across all different ability levels. There are a number of very good quality nursery and beginner slopes which due to the resorts high altitude and efficient grooming tend to stay in excellent condition throughout the year. There is also plenty on offer for intermediate to advanced skiers, the quality and quantity of the red runs in Val Thorens is exceptional.

Val Thorens Off Piste

There is a huge amount of accessible off piste in Val Thorens with an abundance of varied terrain in the bowl surrounding the resort. The Cime de Caron chairlift gives access to some particularly good off piste including the infamous ‘fourth valley’ which has some amazing lines. It is well worth checking conditions before heading off piste in Val Thorens – despite it’s snowsure nature the rocky terrain underneath means it requires more snow cover than other resorts before the off piste is fully in condition. The best way to discover the off piste in Val Thorens is through one of our off piste courses.

Val Thorens Snow Parks

Val Thorens has an excellent snow park in the Plateau sector which is 90 000 square metres! The park is well thought out with beginner, intermediate and advanced sections making it an excellent place to learn and progress. Val Thorens also lays on an air jump (jump into an air bag) allowing you to try out new tricks with a safe landing. Beside the park is an impressive half pipe and a well made Board-X track.

  • The food is PHENOMENAL at UCPA – brilliant for those with eyes bigger than their belly.

  • No matter how hard you try, when you book everything separately (especially with the Euro and price of food at the moment), you will never beat UCPA.

  • There is always a range of ages, nationalities, mixtures of solo travellers, couples, groups etc. We have booked as a group of 6, a group of 36 (no joke) and even just me and my boyfriend – it works for all.

  • UCPA is a unique and brilliant experience, I would not describe it as a hotel but also not hostel it is somewhere in-between. Its a place where meeting people and making friends...

  • The food offers great variety, choice (several options each night), quantity (as much as you want) and quality is decent (7/10). Cheese and yoghurts coming out of your ears, packed lunch option, afternoon...

  • We all appreciate that we are inside one of those perfect moments, heightened by the expectation of another afternoon riding the perfect, untracked powder that our instructor...

  • Lunch and dinner were epic. Buffet style with delicious and varied options each day and night. Not cheap foods either - Full roast chickens, ribs, roast beef, etc. Unreal!

Val Thorens | A La Carte

Val Thorens is Europe’s Highest ski resort, it also seems to be the hilliest if that makes any sense.

Val Thorens | Student Half Time Instruction

Having been on several Action Outdoor holidays before, myself and my friend knew what was what, though never to Val Thorens before it was another exciting adventure for us.

La Plagne, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens, Chamonix | Ski Full Time, Ski Off Piste

The UCPA system offered by Action Outdoors was so good that I spent seven weeks in four different resorts with them in 2013. I started as a very basic skier and went all the way to completing an off piste course in that time. Everything about the experience was top rate. The instruction was excellent. The food was delicious with plenty of it. The vibe and philosophy at the UCPA centers was totally compelling. It was a truly unigue experience and there is no way on earth that anyone could match them for value for money.Action Outdoors proved themselves a very helpful and friendly organisation in managing my whole trip.  I will never ski with anybody else ever again. This is the real deal. Thank you UCPA and Action Outdoors.

Val Thorens | Beginners Full Time

As a first time skier, I had an amazing holiday through Action Outdoors. The price was unbelieveable with all expenses that it covered considered and all the poeple, both workers at our resort and also other holiday goers, were really easy going and I had a brilliant time the entire week and will recommend this to friends & family

Val Thorens | Ski Full Time Instruction

Good resort:
nice atmosphere, excellent food, convenient to come back and go skiing, friendly staff

Val Thorens | Snowboard Beginner

If you haven't booked yet, you must book now. My boyfriend went on a boys trip to the Chamonix UPCA in March 2012 and was raving about UPCA when we went to Val Thorens in Dec 2012. He soon realised this was just as good. The food was incredible - buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner - I'm sure I put on a few kgs! The resort was ski-in-ski-out so straight on the slopes and the snowboarding was mint too. Good price, good food, good boarding, good accommodation and helpful people. There was nothing missing. Thanks!

Val Thorens | Ski Half Time

Really good all round trip. The hostel is brilliant, has everything you need. Is more than just a hostel but a little less than a hotel, ensuite bathrooms in every room was an added unknown bonus! ski equipment and lessons were really good. part time ski gave us extra time to explore VT. The food at ucpa was much better than had anticipated, great choice, and always enough! Great value for money, and much better than i had anticipated! would recommend to a friend!!
