the UK Partner of UCPA
Flaine is a convenient resort set in the heart of the beautiful Grand Massif ski area and only 70km from Geneva. It’s modern architecture often divides opinion and certainly doesn’t qualify as ‘alpine charm’ but whatever Flaine lacks in looks it makes up for in efficiency. Being purpose built it is well laid out with excellent lift access. The skiing is superb and from Flaine you can access one of the largest ski areas in France, the Grand Massif. It’s not the liveliest or the prettiest resort but with unrivalled access, one of the nicest UCPA centres and great skiing, it’s still well worth a visit.
The skiing in Flaine offers a wide variety of grades with 140km of piste in the Flaine area alone and a total of 265km if you take the whole Grand Massif into account. Flaine has an excellent reputation for early snow cover with North West facing slopes largely above 2000m and an above average annual snowfall. The main bowl at Flaine is particularly good at retaining snow and often stays in good condition long after the last snowfall. There is a great selection of pistes including a dedicated beginner area and a huge number of blue and red runs for intermediates. For expert skiers the bowl off the back of the Tete Pelouse could easily keep you entertained for the whole week but there is so much more to explore.
The main village of Flaine is split into three levels, each with their own cafes shops and bars. Flaine is a car free resort and getting around is easy with the in town funiculars. Purpose built in the 1960’s it was meant to be an architectural masterpiece of the Bauhaus style which matches its surroundings. Whilst it does have some admirers, the general consensus is less favourable, however, this has kept the crowds away. Flaine is still a fantastic resort and being just a short transfer away from Geneva it is also a very convenient resort to visit for a short break. For a more traditional and picturesque alpine village day trips to the neighbouring villages of the Grand Massif are very easy through the impressive ski network.
The UCPA centre in Flaine is one of the nicest of the UCPA centres receiving the full UCPA comfort rating. The centre was recently taken over from a large upmarket hotel chain and the building is modern and comfortable. The centre is well located within the heart of the town centre and a stones throw from the slopes. All the usual UCPA services are on offer including a restaurant, nightclub, bar, ski room and sun terrace. The bar is particularly nice with a large central fireplace and plenty of sofas to collapse into.
