Essaouira

Formerly known as Mogador, Essaouira has preserved the splendor, traditions and cultural wealth of Morocco. The UCPA Centre is located in the heart of this charming city, with blue boats and smells of the spices from the souks surrounding it. The consistent wind has attracted wind sport lovers for over 30 years to this incredible part of the world.

Activities

Famous for it's kitesurfing and surfing, the centre in Essaouira specialises in these sports. Participants are split into groups based on ability and all are welcome, from complete beginners to experts. But it's not all about those sports! The area has an amazing array of landscapes, and a culture certainly worth exploring.

If you are looking for something a bit different from windsports UCPA have so many vaired activties to chose from; Horseriding down the stunning beaches of Essaouria and gallop through the sand. With the surrounding scenery, you will have many unforgettable rides throughout your week. Essaouira offers a unique golfing experience playing in the heart of the sand dunes and forest overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Look after your body practicing yoga focusing on balance, flexibility, and strength, centered around your breathing. Learn to be more aware with conscious breath in both dynamic and static positions. Enjoy guided relaxation and develop an awareness of your body as it relaxes. And finally why not explore on foot, experience typical culture of Essaouria, and see lots of this amazing part of North Africa. You are likely to explore Essaouria of course, but also Marrakech, Laarba Ida Ogourd and in your free time relax in the hotel pool looking out over the ocean.

Local Town

Essaouira is an historic town located on the west coast of Morocco, exposed to the powerful Atlantic. Originally a completely fortified town, many parts are still contained within the walls. The town offers a more laid-back approach to life, especially when compared to the frenetic Marrakesh. A perfect destination for combining sport, culture, and relaxation.

The Essaouira medina, which is essentially the area within the old walls of the city that is the main place tourists visit, is full of shops and stalls. There are rugs for sale, clothes, furniture, bags, shoes, plus everything else! If there is a written price, that’s the price. If there is no price bartering can be done.

When in Morocco, mint tea is a must try. Alcohol is not big in Essaouira for religious reasons, but there are places that sell it. It's not overpriced, but we would suggest immersing yourself in the local culture with a mint tea instead!

UCPA Centre

Instead of having a purpose built UCPA centre, in Essaouira UCPA use Hotel Miramar. The hotel is situated on the beach, in the centre of the town. Not only can you sunbathe on the private beach, but you can also take advantage of the many recreational facilities including an indoor pool and a sauna. Rooms are 2-3 beds shared between guests (twin and double rooms are available for a supplement).

Testimonials

  • Alongside the excellent equipment, lessons, food and accommodation, the thing that brings me back year on year is the atmosphere, as made by the people who go to UCPA.

  • Action Outdoors set up a personal group page and as a group leader, I did’t have to worry about taking everyone’s payments. Each group member is responsible to pay their own way through the group page directly to Action Outdoors. Win!

  • The kit is top quality and new and there is a workshop for any adjustments or changes you may require during your week.

  • UCPAs are like an upmarket hostel. However, they are always comfortable and if you want to meet people, the rooms of 4-6 are a great way of doing so. Even better is most of the UCPAs have some twin rooms...

  • Imagine moules mariniereier, steak (cooked how you like it) and paella just to name a few options during our week and you get a picture of how well fed you will be at UCPA.

  • The food provided was up to a very good standard for all meals with a soup starter available every dinner followed by two or three hot meal choices, a salad bar and a variety of tasty deserts and fruit.

  • The UCPA has its own bar which is slightly cheaper than anywhere else in the resort. It has a pool table, comfy seats and a good atmosphere.
