Sal

Portuguese for 'salt', this island in Cape Verde belongs to the northern group of islands called the 'Barlavento', literally meaning 'exposed to the wind'. With an average year round temperature of 24°C, this island provides an excellent climate for sea sports.

Activities

Famous for it's kitesurfing and surfing, the centre in Sal specialises in these sports. Participants are split into groups based on ability and all are welcome, from complete beginners to experts. But it's not all about those sports! There is also the option to do scuba diving courses, as well as wind surfing.

Local Town

UCPA Sal is located in the small town of Santa Maria, right by the sea on the most southern area of the island. With a population of just over 6,000 people, the town is small yet lively with its industrial history built upon the exporting of salt - the name of the island in Portuguese!

UCPA Centre

Instead of having a purpose built UCPA centre, in Sal UCPA use the Ponta Preta Residence. The hotel is a couple of minutes walk away from the beach and bars in the area. Rooms are 2-3 beds shared between guests (twin rooms are available for a small supplement).

Testimonials

  • The food is great and there is tons of it from breakfast, lunch, snack time (after your day on the slopes) and dinner in the evening. My favourite meal this year was on the Thursday evening when it was...

  • All UCPAs are very friendly and sociable. The bar and dining areas are open with big tables, encouraging people to sit together and get to know each other. This makes it very easy as a solo traveller.

  • The UCPA has its own bar which is slightly cheaper than anywhere else in the resort. It has a pool table, comfy seats and a good atmosphere.

  • There is always a range of ages, nationalities, mixtures of solo travellers, couples, groups etc.  We have booked as a group of 6, a group of 36 (no joke) and even just me and my boyfriend – it works for all.

  • The lessons are brilliant with fun instructors who know how to give everyone individual instruction and to party when its time to party.

  • There isn’t a part of UCPA that I don’t enjoy, it’s some of the best holidays I’ve had and going to have.

  • One click and you’ve booked everything. No searching around for lessons, ski-hire etc. And the best thing is you can keep adding people to your group.

  • The food offers great variety, choice (several options each night), quantity (as much as you want) and quality is decent.  Cheese and yoghurts coming out of your ears, packed lunch option, afternoon tea and cake and you can drink your own wine at dinner.
