Resort

Lacanau Resort

The resort of Lacanau-Ocean is the main beach resort, not to be confused with Lacanau-Ville, a town further along the coast. Lacanau-Ocean is a world-class resort for all water-sports. Located on the Atlantic coast of France with 14 kilometres of uninterrupted fine, golden sand and over 2300 hours sunshine per year, it is home to many International sports championships.

Surfing and Bodyboarding are the main sports of Lacanau, famous for its offshore swell producing good surf and every year it hosts the "Lacanau Pro" - the official stage of the surfing world championship.

Lacanau-Ocean resort is in the heart of the Medoc Peninsular, the beaches are protected by the pine forest and still feel secluded despite its popularity. The whole area is very well-kept by the local tourist board, they are keen to keep the site in its natural state, providing a beautiful well-preserved environment for all.

Other things to do

Tennis, bicycle hire, volleyball and petanque. Beautiful walks through the forest and bike rides to surrounding lakes are possible from UCPA, just ask at reception for a map! There are over a hundred kilometres of cycle paths through the pine forests, connecting the lakes to the ocean.

Lacanau Ocean is a charming seaside town with a colourful architectural mix of seaside villas from the most modest, to the most opulent. Its biggest attraction is the 14km of fine, golden sand which lends itself perfectly to beach and water sports. The town has plenty of shopping and bars in addition to a multitude of sports clubs.

Lacanau Ocean was 'founded' at the beginning of the XXth century. In 1884 Pierre Ortal, Lacanau owner and service manager for Railways Landes, made known in writing to the municipality of Lacanau his intention to create a seaside resort on the coastal dunes of the town. The Municipal Council studied the draft filed by Pierre Ortal with interest and agreed to extend the future course of Bordeaux Saint-Louis in Lacanau (open 1885) to create this resort.

Of interest...

Every August (since 1979), Lacanau hosts the World Surfing Championships - The Lacanau Pro.
The oldest surf club in Europe, Lacanau Surf Club was created 1968
Lacanau-Ocean celebrated the centenary of its establishment during the summer of 2006.

Food description

The food is served buffet style each day. Breakfast is yogurts, cereals, fruit juice, coffee and bread - don't be surprised to see that the coffee, tea or hot chocolate is taken French style - a soup bowl!
UCPA LacanauTypically, lunch is a DIY picnic made up at breakfast time (great choice of breads, meats, cheeses, pasta, salad, fruit, sweets etc). The picnic lunch means maximum time on the beach or golf course without travelling back to UCPA. Note that during the cooler months e.g. September, you will often return to the centre for a hot lunch.
Dinner is a 4 course buffet - typically a salad bar style starter, choice of 3 or 4 main courses - most often including fish, cheese selection, fruit, dessert and ice-cream freezer.
Any special dietry requirements should be made known to reception staff at check-in. Generally, vegetarians will find a wide enough choice within the buffet.

Entertainment

The UCPA staff lay on an entertainment program each week. It's certainly not Butlins and there is no pressure to take part - all quite low key. Typical program would include stretching in the early evening, crepe making, quiz, sketch evening, karaoke and some evenings a live band.
Equally in the town there is a great selection of bars & nightclubs to suit all tastes.

History

UCPA Lacanau bedroomUCPA is more than 40 years old, and was originally set-up by the French government to encourage young people to enjoy the outdoors. It is now a "not for profit" organisation with all profits being put back into refurbishing the centres.
