Les Deux Alpes

Dates and Prices

Resort

Credit UCPA BrunoLongoLes Deux Alpes ski area has 200km of pistes and caters for all levels of skier or snowboarder. It has a high altitude of 3,600m at the top to 1,650m at the bottom, plus glacial skiing, giving it a fantastic snow record. The ski area is centred on Les Crêtes at 2100m and Toura at 2600m.

The snowpark at Les Deuz Alpes is the largest in Europe, with a 120m half pipe, two boarder-cross fields, a free-cross area, big air, rails, jumps and much much more! Les Deuz Alpes hosts the World Snowboard Meeting each October.

Beginners – a great place to learn to ski or snowboard with spacious nursery slopes and easy runs high on the Glacier du Mont de Lans with guaranteed snow and great views!

Intermediates – will find some great quality runs around the glacier, early intermediates will enjoy the Pied Moutet sector with gentle sunny blue runs served by 3 lifts. Les Deux Alpes is close to ski areas of Alpe d'Huez and Serre Chevalier which are worth visiting if you run out of pistes to zoom down.

Experts – have come to the right place. The red and black runs throw up a medly of steep chutes and natural canyons. Read between the lines, the narrow black pistes means, loads of steep accessible off piste in-between!! Tree lined off piste skiing too. Take a guide and head to the glacial terrain of La Meije, reached by a 20 minute hike from the top of the ski area to the 3568m Dome de la Lauze. Ski all the way to the off piste mecca that is La Grave! Credit UCPA Pascal Bouglakow

Town Centre

Credit Dux Alpes TOLes Deux Alpes is a purpose-built ski resort, which lies between Grenoble and Briançon, making it easily accessible. The resort is 2km long and two streets wide, so it is not a pretty resort, but has a good friendly and lively feel.

Nightlife

Les Deux Alpes is a party town, with perhaps the best variety of nightlife in the French Alps. With many clubs, pubs and apres-ski venues - every night is a good night out for all. We like the Windsor which has the feel of a London pub but covered in skis, boots and lots and lots of skiers!

Other things to do

Ice cave in glacier, heated outdoor pool, cinema

History
It has been a ski rsort since 1939 when a single rope tow was installed, which famously fell down after 15 minutes of its opening ceremony! Slightly embarrassing! In 1950 a gondola was developed and the resort has grown hugely.

Click here for a Virtual Tour of UCPA Les Deux Alpes 360 View. UCPA Les Deux Alpes is 100m from the ski area and just 2 minutes' walk from the town centre. The building is a wooden and stone chalet, boasting a restaurant with a fabulous terrace overlooking the Ecrins National Park, a bar and the large ski storage rooms. This is one of the smaller UCPA ski centres with a total capacity of 168, rooms sleep 2, 4 or 6 persons. New to the Action Outdoors list of resorts - we are sure it will sell out quickly.

Food description

The food is served buffet style each day.  Credit Bruno LongoBreakfast is yogurts, cereals, fruit juice, coffee and bread - don't be surprised to see that the coffee, tea or hot chocolate is taken French style - a soup bowl !
Typically lunch is a DIY picnic made up at breakfast time (great choice of breads, meats, cheeses, pasta, salad, fruit, sweets etc).  The picnic lunch means maximum time on the mountains without spending a fortune on expensive mountain side restaurants.  Note that beginners will often return to the centre for a hot lunch.
Dinner is a 4 course buffet - typically a salad bar style starter, choice of 3 or 4 main courses - most often including fish, cheese selection, fruit, dessert and ice-cream  freezer.
Any special dietry requirements should be made known to reception staff at check-in.  Generally vegetarians will find a wide enough choice within the buffet.

Entertainment

The UCPA staff lay on an entertainment program each week.  It's certainly not Butlins and there is no pressure to take part - all quite low key.  Credit Bruno LongoTypical program would include stretching in the early evening, crepe making, quiz, sketch evening, karaoke and some evenings a live band.
Equally in the town there is a great selection of bars & nightclubs to suit all tastes.

History

UCPA is more than 40 years old, and was originally set-up by the French government to encourage young people to enjoy the outdoors.  It is now a "not for profit" organisation with all profits being put back into refurbishing the centres.
The ethos of sport is still first on the agenda, but the instructors and centre staff don't forget that it is still your holiday.

Snowpark - The snowpark in Les Deux Alpes is the largest in Europe, and is worth checking out to see the atmosphere, even if you don't give it a go yourself! Les Deux Alpes hosts the World Snowboard Meeting each October.

La Fee - This sector of Deux Alpes ski area is just off the shoulder below Toura and is usually an uncrowded spot, where you will find some of the best blue and black runs on the mountain.
